Web Commerce Isn’t Really Social…Yet

My colleague Tricia Duryee has an excellent post up on eMoney about the big trends in e-commerce: mobile, local and social. But when you think about massive new Web commerce businesses like Groupon and Gilt Groupe, they are barely social at all.

Sites like Gilt are supposedly exclusive discount fashion communities, but the reality is they will take anyone who will pay. Groupon, which just got Google to say it was worth as much as $6 billion and is on the verge of an investor valuation of $4.75 billion, is a glorified email list. Sure, users must swarm a deal to activate it, but that always happens. And users can share deals with their friends on Facebook and Twitter, earning referral rewards if they buy a deal.

Hitwise researcher Bill Tancer told me via email that only 8.3 percent of Groupon traffic comes from social media referrals. That’s compared to 24 percent of Groupon traffic coming from shopping and classifieds Web pages (a.k.a. ads) and 13 percent from email sites. Upstream traffic from social networks as a portion of total Groupon traffic declined 83 percent from Nov. 9 to Nov. 10. Tancer said the move from social networks to email reflects the shift of Groupon visitors from early adopters to mainstream users.

The thing is, as seen particularly in the gaming business, social may have the capacity to be an incredible multiplier for any industry. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said more than once that he thinks e-commerce will be one of the next big sectors to be disrupted by companies that are built to be social from the ground up.

Linking social with commerce is tricky. Besides user reviews and accounts, which have been around forever, much of social commerce is very basic. Amazon recently launched the most minimal of minimal Facebook integrations, recommending products based on opted-in users’ public “Likes” and giving gift suggestions for friends with upcoming birthdays. The Web retailer could have gone much deeper, by, for instance, automatically connecting Amazon users to their Facebook accounts, or helping users tell friends about new items they have bought. But that would have raised privacy hackles, as with previous Facebook initiatives, like the discontinued Facebook Beacon or the current Instant Personalization program.

Some retailers are trying to sell things directly on Facebook, like Delta Air Lines tickets and JCPenney apparel. I see the point of trying to capture users on the sites where they spend all their time, but it seems a little awkward.

Not to say Facebook isn’t already developing a burgeoning business in virtual e-commerce through its gaming partners that could eventually extend to real-world goods (though of course the margins would be much worse). And yes, there are all sorts of real-world deals you can access by playing the “mayor game” on a local social service like Foursquare.

Also on the start-up front, the collage community Polyvore arranges deals and creates tools to help its two million users influence fashion designers, and indie retailer Moxsie asks its Twitter followers to help it choose what items to sell. There are also start-ups, like Payvment and Milyoni, that provide tools for Facebook storefronts. And the purchase-sharing platforms Blippy and Swipely are social commerce taken to the extreme.

None of those are Groupon-scale businesses, but there are many playing around with the potentially explosive combination of social and commerce.

One cool example of social commerce I just saw today was in a post by E.B. Boyd at Fast Company. Tea Collection, a boutique children’s clothing maker, used the Facebook Like button to decide which of its selection of discontinued girls’ dresses to deeply discount. When a $59 dress was chosen by user Likes, it was discounted to $10. It quickly sold out at a loss, but additional purchases by customers brought in by the sale gave the company one of its biggest overall sales days ever.

Shocker: Top Online Purchases of 2010 Don’t Involve Justin Bieber!

ustin Bieber’s fans must have been satisfied with watching him for free in 2010.

Because despite the pop star’s domination of both YouTube and Facebook’s charts this year, his popularity did not translate into dollars spent on Amazon or eBay.

The leading picks for eBay’s top-shopped and pop-culture obsessions of 2010 were: The iPhone 4, Barbie, military jackets, Hot Wheels and the iPad.

EBay said that in the U.S. there were 1.63 million items sold related to the iPhone 4, and 631,399 iPad-related items sold.

We also asked Amazon to cull its list of bestsellers to see what was trending among consumers in 2010.

It found that while the top-selling electronic gadget on Amazon was clearly the Kindle (the Wi-Fi model, to be exact), the top computer sold was the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro. The top-selling phone was AT&T’s Samsung Captivate (yes, Android!).

Finally, the other standout result was that not everyone got what they wished for.

In other words, the top-selling items did not always synch up with the most-wished-for items stored on Amazon’s Wish List. For instance, the top computer wished for was Apple’s iPad. (Still, when Amazon announced earlier this week that the third-generation Kindle is now the best-selling product in history, CEO Jeff Bezos insisted that the Kindle and iPad serve different niches, and therefore don’t compete. Maybe it helps when the Kindle is considered an electronic, and the iPad a computer).

How to connect your Mac and Xbox 360

If, like me, you have your Xbox 360 placed near your wifi-enabled computer, but away from your wireless router or modem, then you'll want to take advantage of the Xbox's ability to "borrow" your computer's internet connection. For Windows users, this process is simple; it's just a matter of "bridging" your computer's wifi connection to your PC's internet port which is plugged into your Xbox. For Mac users, the process is not so easy. What follows is a guide for getting your Xbox 360 to accept Mac OS X's internet sharing option.
Before you start configuring, open up Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and type "ifconfig en0" (zero, not a capital-o). You're looking for the bit that says "inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". In my case, the number I get here is 192.168.2.1 Second, note down the IP address of your wireless router, which in my case is 192.168.0.1

On your Mac
1. Connect your Mac to your wireless internet connection
2. Connect your Xbox 360 to your Mac via Ethernet
3. In System Preferences -> Sharing, enable Internet Sharing between your Airport and Ethernet connection

On your Xbox 360
1. Start up your Xbox and navigate to the Network settings menu
2. Under IP address, enter the number you got from the "ifconfig en0" command earlier on, but with the final number one place higher. In my case, I take the 192.168.2.1, and input 192.168.2.2 in the IP address box on my Xbox 360.
3. Under subnet, input 255.255.255.0
4. Under router/gateway, enter the number you got earlier from the "ifconfig en0" command. In my case, that's "192.168.2.1"
5. Move onto DNS. Enter the IP address of your wireless router (in my case, "192.168.0.1") in both the primary and secondary IP address fields
6. Leave PPPoE and advanced settings blank (i.e. OFF and Automatic)
7. You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live via your internet sharing Mac

This guide shows the connection of Mac and Xbox 360 is not so difficult. You can try it by yourself.

Hallelujah for Flash Mobs!

Flash mobs: They’re no longer elite events for cool kids with secret passwords. This holiday season has seen a remarkable run of flash mobs in North America (and subsequently on YouTube), with both participants and audience members eager to partake in an increasingly democratized art form and then post their experiences online.

One particular highly accessible kind of flash mob, in which local singing groups perform Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus at shopping malls, has been replicated all over the U.S. and Canada in the last month or so.

Quickly: Flash mobs are traditionally secretly orchestrated performances that play out in public places while bringing a little bit of magic to unsuspecting people in the right place at the right time. If you’ve ever seen those videos of a person breaking into song or dance in a public place, then being joined by hordes of interlopers who somehow know the full routine, you’ve seen a flash mob. (There are also less choreographed variations, like public pillow fights.)

Since flash mobs seem so fun, organic and full of life, they’ve of course been co-opted by marketers who mimic the style right down to camera shots of the surprised and confused onlookers capturing videos of the moment with their own camera phones. But they’ve also recently been adopted by wholesome community groups wanting to spread a little holiday joy. And in many cases, both the performers and the audience know about the event in advance (element of surprise be damned).

One flash mob performance of “Hallelujah” in a Canadian shopping mall, posted on YouTube on Nov. 17, has been seen more than 25 million times. YouTube’s Trends blog recently called it “by far, the most popular video of the season.”

Julian Assange Is a Samantha (But a Charlotte to the Swedish Police)

BoomTown was deep in meetings at the Dow Jones mother ship in New York yesterday with more suits than you can find at Barneys, so I failed to get up this latest Julian Assange spoof from “Saturday Night Live.”

Here the WikiLeaks leader comments on Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg recently beating him out for Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

The faux Assange is not happy that social networking beat out classified documents.

Motorola Teases a Honeycomb-based Android Tablet for CES, Stings Rivals

Motorola has posted a video on YouTube hinting at a CES launch for its much-anticipated Android tablet.

The video shows the evolution of tablets, beginning with the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt, which offered good graphics but weighed a little too much for good portability. Other stops on the journey include the Ten Commandments–”Excellent durability, but zero flexibility (can’t edit)”–and the 1989 Grid tablet, with its 20-megabyte hard drive.

From there, Motorola starts taking swipes at the current competition, including the iPad, which it calls a “giant iPhone,” and the Galaxy Tab, which it says is “Android OS, but Android OS for a phone.”

As for Motorola’s tablet, it is shrouded, but a buzzing bee next to a Motorola logo would seem to confirm its use of Honeycomb, the version of Android being explicitly developed for tablets. The video ends with the text “CES 2011.”

Google’s Andy Rubin showed a prototype Honeycomb-based Motorola tablet at last month’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference. He said the device was based on an Nvidia Tegra processor, but shared few other technical details. (If you missed the talk, there’s a video of Rubin’s presentation here).

In a backstage interview with Mobilized, Rubin confirmed that Honeycomb is specifically aimed at tablets, tweaking the Android interface to be better suited to running on larger devices and take advantage of the added screen real estate.

Microsoft Really Won’t Have an iPad Killer for CES

There’s some buzz out there that Microsoft will have some giant iPad-killing tablet at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. Don’t believe the hype.

The New York Times posted a story this week playing up the fact that Microsoft will have new tablets to show at CES.

That’s true, but remember–the exact same thing could be said last year. In fact, it was. The New York Times did some similar hyping last year and I similarly warned folks not to get their hopes up.

As was the case last year, Microsoft will show some new tablets as part of Steve Ballmer’s annual overview of all the new hardware coming for PCs, according to sources familiar with Redmond’s plans. Acer, for example, plans to show off its Iconia dual-screen tablet as well as a Windows 7 slate.

Ballmer may even talk a bit about what is coming on the hardware and software fronts, but don’t expect too much, particularly on the Windows 8 front.

The real issue for Microsoft remains the fact that, while it has been talking about tablets for years, Windows-based tablets still don’t present a real challenge to the iPad. And that’s not likely to change after CES.

There has been additional speculation about whether Microsoft is doing work on a tablet based on Windows Phone software, but even if such a project exists, I’m hearing nothing is imminent on that front.

Instead, I expect Ballmer to spend most of his time talking about Microsoft’s areas of strength on the consumer side, particularly around Xbox and Kinect.

New for Xbox Kinect: Bombastic Ballmer’s $2 Billion Blowout

Kinect, Microsoft’s new controllerless controller for the Xbox 360 is shaping up to be a monster hit, one that should give the gaming platform momentum enough to carry it forward for some time to come. Microsoft said last week that it sold 2.5 million Kinects in the device’s first 25 days at market, and feels confident it will sell 5 million by year end. Which should give a nice bump to the company’s top line.

In fact, Caris & Co. analyst Sandeep Aggarwal says he expects Kinect to generate about $2 billion in gross revenue for the Xbox ecosystem. Beyond sales of Kinect itself, the controller is also driving sales of most everything else Xbox related. In Aggarwal’s view, Kinect offers four distinct benefits to Microsoft:

  1. Better material attach rate for the 45 million Xbox installed base
  2. Higher adoption and market share gain for the console itself
  3. An uptick from the sale of new titles
  4. Lower attrition and higher gross new subscriber growth for Xbox Live users

“As expected, the launch of Kinect increased noticeably the overall buzz around Xbox and helped improve the adoption of the console,” he concludes. “Just before the launch, Microsoft increased its forecast for worldwide sales from 3 million to 5 million by the end of the year. This forecast seems conservative now, given the strong reception.”

Groupon’s Andrew Mason Doesn’t Kiss Google and Tell!

It seems as though there is no one that Groupon’s Andrew Mason won’t talk to, in the wake of the failed acquisition of his social buying site by Google.

In a series of interviews over the last week, the Groupon CEO and Co-founder chit-chatted about start-up’s fast growth, waxed poetic over its Chicago roots and marveled on what it’s like riding a digital rocket ship to the moon.

Plus, Mason is quite charming doing it, making all kinds of quips and crazily endearing statements that reporters eat up with a big spoon.

Except that he goes all coy about the single biggest gorilla in the room–or shall we say, Borg? That would be telling us exactly why the search behemoth did not gobble Groupon up, despite a $6 billion price tag.

At least Mason is funny, as you will see here on a segment last week on the “Charlie Rose” television show.

The interview includes Mason’s explanation at the end about how not talking about what happened with Google is like not talking about old dates (Personally, I am a veritable blabfest about old dates, Andrew, so call me sometime, as I have some very good stories!).

RIM Shares a Page From Its PlayBook

Research In Motion CEO Mike Lazaridis arrived at D: Dive Into Mobile with more than just his BlackBerry–he also showed off various features of RIM’s forthcoming PlayBook tablet, including the ability to play Adobe Air applications.

“It’s really simple to use, very fluid,” Lazaridis said, demonstrating various Adobe Air apps, a Flash-based calculator and revamped versions of the productivity applications RIM got through its acquisition of DataViz. He also showed the device’s multitasking capabilities, with 1080p video running alongside other applications.

“This is how we like to be entertained,” Lazaridis said.

As for the size, Lazaridis said it was ultramobile but doesn’t compromise in performance or display. “Seven inches is just the perfect size.”

Pressed on that point, Lazaridis did say it might not be the only size. “We’ve got different sizes potentially coming,” he said.

The PlayBook, which RIM unveiled earlier this year, is due on the market early next year. “It’s tracking first quarter,” Lazaridis said.

Lazaridis said that the QNX operating system used by the PlayBook will make it into smartphones when RIM moves those devices to multicore chips.

A liveblog of his talk can be found here.

The Whole Fuddy-Duddy “60 Minutes” Zuckerberg Interview

Here is the whole CBS interview on “60 Minutes” of Mark Zuckerberg, which aired last night.

The quick poll of the piece on Twitter and in the blogosphere: The Facebook Co-founder and CEO did great and his Harvard University nemisii, the Winklevoss twins, looked goony and graspy (even though Zuck did sandbag them).

And, yes, BoomTown said the Winklevii got enough dough for their role in social networking history and the “toddler CEO” turned out to be a prodigy. Also, that veteran television correspondent Lesley Stahl is a “fuddy-duddy” (she asked and I keed!).

Step 6, Go to "Preferences" and then "Copying" in Senuti. Choose the iTunes Music Folder as the "Save Location" for copied music. Otherwise two copies will be created of each song and will fill up hard drive space.
